Art Basel Miami 2007: Is it Art or is it... ?!

Welcome to Miami - home once again to the Swissy's art show, Art Basel. Miami in December had a distinctly European feel as people flocked Westwards into the land of Sunshine and favourable exchange rates - but what of the Art itself ?

One of the prevalent themes of this year's show was cardboard - cardboard boxes, spray-painted cardboard and other products - TetraPak watch out - your milk cartons could be worth thousands in years to come. Another theme was construction equipment - take you bucket and spade and have it randomly scratch on concrete in return for over $200,000. Our favourite was to have an artist come to your home and (somewhere of his choosing) write "is it truth?" in return for 60,000 Euros - tempted to buy this one and inflict in on an enemy...

Amongst the great was the Hotxon team from White Cube showing silk screens of the Diamond encrusted skull ($21,000) - the skull if you wanted it was sold to a consortium for around $100 MILLION. Also, an amazingly detailed diorama of zombies versus Nazi's - where I am going to put that one - I have absoultely no idea...

More importantly, onto the social scene. The Vanity Fair party was over quickly, but nice pink bracelets are still being sported by the cognoiscenti in St. Barths (more later). The new lounge at the Delano was blasting out 70's disco. Hotels are clearly the last cartel awaiting FBI investigation - all over-priced and under-serviced. The Catalina Hotel though was definitely the best buy for the buck. The Setai, over-priced but an unbeatable lounge bar late at night.

Favourite party was Soho House on the beach - whilst awaiting completion of their new Miami base. Shame they could not do this every year, flying chefs in from London and offering their impeccable brand of hip service in a bedouin style tent, next to the ocean.
